Water purification is the process of removing undesirable and harmful contaminants from water. Undesirable contaminants include suspended particles, bacteria, fungi, viruses and a lot of dissolved particles. The main purpose of purifying water is to make it fit for drinking purpose. There are different words associated with water purification like water purifier, filter, softener, conditioners etc. You might be thinking about the difference between all these. So now, we will see their detailed description.
Water filter is one that eliminates all the visible impurities from water like the dust particles, solid substances etc. The filtering device does not allow these dust particles to pass through it and serves us clean water.
Water purifier, on the other hand, removes all the impurities, chemicals as well as other contaminants. It removes virus, bacteria, parasites and all other unseen impurity from the water. So, by now it must be clear that water filter helps in removing the visible impurities whereas water purifier helps in removing both visible and non-visible impurities.
For converting hard water into soft, one can use a water softener. Water becomes hard by minerals like calcium and magnesium and it can be softened by using the principle of cation or ion exchange in which ions of minerals causing hardness are interchanged with sodium or potassium ions.
One other method for softening water is by changing the crystallization process of Magnesium and Calcium, by this they get less corrosive. This method of softening is implemented by a water conditioner. But generally we use water softener only because, the water that we get through water conditioner is not considered safe.
You need to be attentive while buying a new water purifier for your home. Consider some factors like the initial cost, ease of installation, convenience and ongoing cost of operating the purifier. In some cases, the most inexpensive filters are the most expensive to operate for long term due to the expense and frequency of it's component replacement.
One should try to take a purification system which can perform all the tasks and care must be taken so as to achieve the best results.
